SOME PLACES OF INTEREST IN PUNE
     
 
Dagdusheth Halwai Mandir: A famous temple of Pune located in the city area of Budhwar Peth on the famous Laxmi Road as well as near the Mahatma Phule market, which is popularly known as "Mandai".
     
 
Mandai: Mahatma Phule Mandai is situated in the center of Pune City. Because of its location this place is often used for meetings, Conferences, starting point for the Ganesh festival procession etc. This market is well known for getting fresh vegetables, fruits and articles for the Poojas.
The structure of the market is such that it is eight sided and has 8 ways which lead you out from the center of the market. There are around 526 stalls with particular vegetable or fruits to be sold at particular places. Peculiarities of this place are the huge structure and the stone construction of the market which remained as it is even after so many years.
   
 
Shaniwar Wada : Pune is a historical city, a city with its prized cultural and educational heritage reflected in its architectural evolution. Built in 1736, Shaniwar Wada was once the palace of the Peshwa rulers. It was mysteriously destroyed by a fire in 1827. All that remains is the old fortified wall, but that enjoys a prided place in the hearts of Pune locals. This also forms the backdrop for an annual cultural festival.
   
 
Osho Ashram: Years after the death of Osho, the Osho Ashram at Pune continues to attract people from the farthest corners of the world.
People, from as many as 100 countries, are staying at this ashram, each with a different purpose. You can choose to do anything here, from resting, swimming, meditating and so on. Six different meditations take place at the Osho Ashram of India, on a daily basis and extend for a period of one hour.
   
 
Parvati Temple: Stand atop this hillock for a panoramic view of Pune and also visit its four famous temples. A steep flight of 108 stairs will take you to ‘Nagarkhana’ (drum house), and the imposing temples of Parvati and Devdeveshwar.
   
 
Pune University: The site of Pune University, amidst stately mansions in Ganeshkhind, was the official monsoon residence of the Governor of Bombay. It is a large building in the Italian Gothic style of architecture built with local grey trap rock and surrounded by a 30-meter high square tower.
   
 
Pataleshwar: Located on the Jangli Maharaj Road, this is a temple of Shiva in rock-cut caves with over forty pillars, and a bull (Nandi) in front of Shiva, with sixteen pillars. This dates back to the Rashtrakuta age and is close to one thousand years old.
   
 
Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum: Housed in a quaint Rajasthani styled building is the museum, which holds a one-man collection of fascinating Indian artifacts. Padmashri Dr. H.G. Kelkar, a resident of Pune, devoted his entire life to build this museum. Dr. Kelkar collected exhibits from 1920 to 1960. The museum at present has a collection of over 20,000 objects, which are divided into 40 sections. The prominent exhibits among these are attractive lamps, paintings from the 17th and 19th century, tambool objects, musical instruments and some fine wood work. A masterpiece among the exhibits is the ‘Mastani Mahal’ brought and erected as it was from its original place. Mastani was the mistress of Peshwa Bajirao.
   
 
Chatushringi Temple: This is a shrine of Durga (or Ambreswar). The temple is reached by a flight of steps in stone and concrete. During ‘Navaratri’, the first nine days of the month of Ashvin, a big fair is held here. (This is at a walking distance from our ICC office.)
   
 
National Defense Academy: Situated at Khadakvasla, 17 kilometers from Pune, the Academy imparts basic training to officers and cadets of all the three branches of the Defense Services for Commission in the Army, Navy and Air force.
 
     
 
SOME PLACES OF INTEREST AROUND PUNE
     
 
Sinhagad: Sinhagad, formerly known as Kondhana, was one of the most impregnable forts in Western India. The fort changed hands many times; from Mohammed Tughlak in 1340 A.D. to the British in 1918 A.D. (Shivaji conquered the fort in 1670, but lost his ablest commander, Tanaji Malusure, fondly addressed as ‘Sinh’ or lion in appreciation of his valor).
     
 
Panshet Dam: Try your hand at kayaking or windsurfing at MTDC’s recently developed Water Sports Complex. There are special facilities for speed-boats and water scooters.

     
 
Alandi: Alandi, a small village on the banks of river Indrayani (also known as Devachi Alandi) is hallowed by the association of saint Dnyaneshwar.
     
 
Bhimashankar: Bhimashankar is one among the five revered jyotirlingas in Maharashtra. The beautiful Shiva temple at Bhimshankar was constructed by Nana Phadnis, an eminent statesman of the Peshwa reign. The wooden entrance of the temple is beautifully carved. On the Mahashivratri day, a special religious fair is attended by over 20,000 devotees. Bhimashankar is endowed with beautiful scenery and enveloped by a vibrant atmosphere.
     
 
Karla & Bhaja Caves: Largest Chaitya Caves in India that date back to 2nd Century B.C. The Chaitya (Assembly Hall) among the caves is the biggest of its kind and well-preserved.
     
 
Khandala & Lonavala: Khandala is one of the most popular hill stations near Pune city. Scenically situated in the Western Ghats, Khandala has serene surroundings, pleasant climate and easy approach by road and rail. All in all, an ideal resort for a restful holiday. Lonavala, neighboring Khandala, is another popular hill resort situated at a height of 596 meters in the Western Ghats and is known for its pleasant climate the whole year through. Lonavala is famous for sanatoriums and religious ashrams.
     
 
Ashta Vinayaka: Vinayaka is another name for Lord Ganesh. Eight effigies sculptured by nature are housed in the temples created ages ago at the places where the effigies where first identified. These ‘Swayambhu’ effigies, now sacred idols, are the famous Ashta Vinayakas or eight Ganeshas. They can be visited over a weekend.
     
 
Mahabaleshwar: Mahabaleshwar is a hill station located in the Satara District in the Western Ghats range of Maharashtra, India. With one of the few evergreen forests of the world, it served as the summer capital of Bombay province during the British Raj.
     
 
Shirdi:The Shirdi Saibaba Temple, located at Shirdi, Maharashtra, India attracts millions of devotees of all religions, castes and creed who come to pay homage to Shri Sai Baba. The temple is a beautiful shrine that was built over the Samadhi of Shri Sai Baba.
the most important place in Shirdi is Baba's temple - the Samadhi Mandir is his grave, which literally millions have visited and still continues to draw many more.
